I
rolled into San Diego the Saturday before Con, which allowed time
for things like lunch with Rebecca at our favorite
place downtown, the Elephant and Castle. |
|
I'm
going to pretend I don't have a Dr. Who joke on deck for this photo.
Because that would mean I know who Dr. Who is. |
|
Rebecca
thinks about making a phone call, but realizes she just hasn't the
quid, wot? |
|
Rebecca
and her car, parked across from that wacky Pacific Ocean. |
|
The
Monday before Con, I headed over to visit my old peeps at GEICO
Insurance. Here Rebecca and I are posing with very subtle company
vehicles. |
|
And
we still are. I hear standing near these can save you 15% or more
on car insurance... |
|
Me
and my buddy J.D. hanging out by my brand-new flamin'
van in the GEICO parking lot. |
|
Rebecca,
too, feeling ghetto fabulous, feels the need to be seen with the
flames. |
|
Monday
night, when Tim flew into town, we hooked for drinks with Nice Guy
super-fan Summer and her main man Stefan.
At Elephant and Castle again. Hey, it's an Irish pub, where else
am I gonna be? |
|
Summer
and Stefan. |
|
Summer
and me. |
|
Summer,
Tim and me. I TOLD you he showed up... |
|
You
thought I was just making that name up, didn't you? See? "Elephant
and Castle". Not two things you usually see in the same place,
but San Diego is a magical land... |
|
And
Wednesday of Comic-Con week means you're at the Convention Center
picking up your BADGES, baby! They stink, and you need them... |
|
Lots
of waiting around involved in that. And here, waiting, is Tim and
our old pals Joel (editor/writer from DarkWater
Enterprises) and Jeff. |
|
Folks
roaming around and waiting...and dreaming of day one of the Con,
starting in just a matter of hours! |
|
And
on day one, Thursday, Rebecca and J.D. came down to hang out and
check out the sights. Here's me and Rebecca with Lego Batman. Yeah,
I didn't know Batman was made of Legos, either. The things you learn
at Comic-Con. |
|
And
here's Rebecca with Sponge Bob...also made of Legos. |
|
J.D.
Dude. Don't turn around or anything, but...(whisper) Batman's right
behind you. Just don't make any sudden movements. Or commit any
crimes. |
|
Rebecca
posing with non-Lego Batman. |
|
Which
one's the real Leia? You make the call... |
|
Being
the big ham that he is, Yoda can't resist slipping into Rebecca's
photo |
|
Rebecca
partying with droids. Thankfully, Comic-Con DOES serve their kind... |
|
J.D.
and Rebecca roaming the Con |
|
Every male in the vicinity is stunned into disbelieving silence
at the sight of a GIRL shopping for comics. Dogs and cats, living
together, mass hysteria... |
|
J.D.
stops by, calls Rebecca a nerd, then goes to check out some action
figures... |
|
And
it ain't a Comic-Con without a visit to the booth of Sacramento's
own Dan Cooney! Here's me, Joel and Rebecca checking
out the Valentine action. |
|
And
here's Tim with MIKE T.!! Very long story. This
is an old friend of ours we lost track of like a couple of decades
ago. So of course we finally run into him again in the middle of
100,000 people at a con. |
|
Yeah,
that's right. I said Mike T.! Had to get in a photo with him so
other friends of ours would believe I actually saw him. |
|
And
the two Mikes again. He's the reason, by the way, that most of my
inner circle of friends still call me "Mike O." to this
day. Their kids even call me "Uncle Mike O." You got two
Mikes hanging around, you have to keep is straight somehow. |
|
Thankfully,
Comic-Con isn't growing at all. Really. Good...choke...Lord! |
|
Yeah,
JUST a few people wanted to get into the Battlestar Galactica panel.
SOME of us were smart enough to have people inside holding seats
for us. SUCKers! |
|
Speaking
of the seat-holders...here's our boys Joel, Tony
and Russ waiting for the panel to start. Tony,
by the way, is watching the DVD-Rom of "Done the Impossible"...the
Serenity documentary that he and I were in (something we'd just
found out that day...) |
|
Tony,
Russ and Tim waiting for Galactic goodness |
|
And
the goodness came...and so did Lucy Lawless! I
really need to rethink that sentence, don't I? SO much more attractive
as a blonde, if you ask me. Already sitting down are series creators
David Eick and Ronald D. Moore,
and SCI FI VP of original programming Erik Storey.
Oh, and that's TV Guide's Lisa Chambers moderating |
|
Lucy,
David, Ronald and Erik kicking it on stage |
|
And
the ladies go wild... In walks James Callis (B.G.'s
resident crazy person and chief executive Gaius Baltar). |
|
Hail
to the CHIEF, baby! No, the OTHER chief. Crew Chief Tyrol (actor
Aaron Douglas), a big fan favorite, steps on stage
as well. |
|
And appearing for his very first Comic-Con...Edward James
Olmos (Admiral William Adama)!!! Yes, this is why I came
to the panel, old school Miami Vice fan that I am. |
|
Castillo...I
mean, Adama...takes a seat. Launch all vipers and get them to South
Miami. The deal's going down... |
|
The
panel answers questions while Aaron Douglas takes a photo of the
crowd. Unfortunately, I think I blinked... |
|
The actors chat about stuff coming up in the show (that show that
TV Guide called "The Best Show of 2005"), thank you very
much... |
|
I
think this is where Olmos was warning us all how dark next season
is going to be, and suggesting that none of us watch it. Yeah, the
SCI FI VP really enjoyed THAT joke. Ha ha, very funny... |
|
And
another shot of the panel guests. |
|
And
another. |
|
And
one more. Just to be safe. |
|
Ah,
our favorite spot to take a breather between Con happenings...that
place outside the mezzanine. Tony, Russ and I caught some some sun
and some cigars |
|
Russ
and Tony watching naval ships out in the bay |
|
Like
a villain. That's how Tony's chillin'. |
|
Russ
first attempts to live out his Superman fantasy... |
|
...and
then sticks with his tried-and-true Patton fantasy. Lead him, follow
him, or get of his way... |
|
Know what I like about Comic-Con? It's the only place you can be
having lunch and suddenly realize you're eating your sandwich next
to Princess Leia and a stormtrooper. That just doesn't happen at
Taco Bell. |
|
And
Saturday, our friends Kaye and Ben
showed up, seen here looking up stuff on the program schedule with
Joel |
|
And
this year, Kaye and Ben brought the boys. Here they are with Robert
and Cameron, two guys experiencing Comic-Con for
the first time (and are now probably scarred for life...) |
|
Fight!
Fight! I got ten bucks on Cameron! |
|
And
it also ain't a Comic-Con without hooking up with Nice Guy/Browncoat
gals Suzi and Jessica! Woo hoo!
I hadn't gotten to see them since the big Serenity premiere in Hollywood. |
|
And
here's Jessica, Suzi, Tim and me at the screening of "Done
the Impossible" on Saturday night. Jess, Suzi and I were all
in the film. I'm not bragging or anything. I'm just rubbing it in
for Tim's sake... |
|
And
on the way home, Tim and I stopped off in L.A. and hooked up for
lunch with an old friend from high school, Jennifer
(who we recently found again...and who's now a certified Nice Guy
fan!). Also appearing here is Jen's son Scott.
The photo was taken by his sister Beth. Just didn't want to leave
her out... |
