Tim
Watts...master of all he surveys! Here Tim checks out the
oceanfront view at the Fool Court hotel room in San Diego.
Here's
the view from our balcony if you look to the left. Nothing quite
like a cruise ship horn blaring at the crack of dawn...
And
to the right out our window, the famous Star of India. And the sign
for our downstairs pub, the Elephant and Castle.
Speaking
of the pub, we found that pigeons in San Diego feel free to just
stroll on in and order drinks at will...
Mike
enjoys some ocean breeze up in the room. Not master of all he surveys,
but happy to be back in San Diego.
And
the sun sinks slowly in the west in San Diego. Tomorrow, it's registration
day, and Preview Night as the Convention fun begins...
Wednesday,
July 21st (Registration and Preview Night)
Check
it out! Tim showing off his Fool Court Press exhibitor convention
badge.
Here's
a shot of the floor from the Small Press area as companies are setting
up their tables and booths.
Tim
setting up the Fool Court table in the Small Press area before Preview
Night begins.
A
shot of our Nice Guy banner, worked up for us by our pal Aaron Storck.
Tim
sitting at our completed Fool Court table.
The
banner hanging over the Small Press area...just in case you have
trouble finding it...
Here's
one of our Small Press neighbors, the guys behind Radioactive
Panda.
Your
Fool Court team, Mike and Tim, kicking it at the table on Preview
Night.
Tim
works the phone, making movie deals, talking with our agent...okay,
he's just taking a cell call. But we can dream. Behind him, "Pewfell's"
Chuck Whelon works his lucky hat to make some sales.
Thursday,
July 22 (First day of the Con)
On
the way to start the Convention, Nice Guy artist Tim Watts enjoys
delicious Florida Orange Juice.
Here's
Tim in the lobby outside the convention hall with all the other
exhibitors.
In
the background, you can see the eAdultComics girls setting up their
booth. Yeah, the view from our table was pretty good...
Joel
B. Levy, Nice Guy pal, enjoys his copy of "The Nice
Guy: Pilot". That's good readin'!
And
Nice Guy pal Russ Williams enjoys his copy as well.
And who wouldn't?!
Tim
passes his time between sales doing Nice Guy sketching.
Joel
hanging out with Nice Guy pal Jeff Baumgarnder
in the Small Press area.
Nice
Guy pal Tony Graham makes merry during Nice Guy
update night at Russ's house.
Tim
goes a little demon on us at update night as Russ's dog Wile
E. looks on.
Friday,
July 22rd (Day Two of the Con)
A
shot of the San Diego Convention Center, home of Comic-Con International.
A
giant robot! Ahhhh! The film studios spare no expense at pushing
their new films, like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".
Tim
spots the giant robot! Ahhhh!!!
Another
shot of Tim SPOTTING THE GIANT ROBOT!!! AHHHHH!!!
Even
the dance girls in Jabba's Palace dig the Nice Guy!
In
case you were wondering? No. Pokemon will never die. Sorry about
that.
Your
friendly Nice Guy writer, Michael "I bought this shirt in
the gift shop" O'Connell.
Just
a shot of how the Convention floor looks from the Nice Guy table.
If you turn to your left, that is...
A
look at the action in the Small Press area.
Here's
another of our neighbors, the guys who make "Western
Tales of Terror". Spooky! Yet, Western...
Hey,
it's the Star Wars Pavilion. Did the stormtrooper give it away?
Or
was it Bobba Fett that gave it away?
And
the DC Comics booth is right near the Star Wars one, where the
Batman statue looms menacingly.
But
back to Star Wars...TELL me this isn't the first time you've seen
a Darth Vader made of Lego's. Dare ya!
Where
else are you going to go besides Comic-Con to check out a (nearly)
full-sized X-Wing fighter, huh?
Another shot
of the pretty X-Wing.
And
it's Mike with the X-Wing. Do they make these things with wheelchair
lifts, do you think?
Not
to be outdone, the Lord of the Rings pavilion gave us a life-sized
Ring Wraith.
And
a full-sized Uruk-hai. Were there alleys in Middle Earth? You
wouldn't want to meet this guy in one.
And
that is one big-ass cave troll guarding their line of action figures.
Let's
meet some more of our Small Press neighbors! Here's Garret
Izumi, artist of "Three Grey Women"
and other fine comics.
And
here's our next door neighbor Chuck Whelon, creator and artist
of "Pewfell"
She's
not a Nazi! Honest! It's satire, people! It's S. E. Burrows
(Stephanie to her Small Press neighbors), creator of the hilarious
"Meet Herr Hitler".
It's
Allen and Bonnie of Fan-Atic Press pushing the
exciting "Slam Bang" comics anthology.
Here's
Andy Chang with Metal Box Comics,
and a big Golden State fan, too!
It's
those crazy kids from Bag of Chips, all the way
from New York. Their "Super-Friends with Benefits" tee
shirt was a big Con hit.
And
another shot of those Radioactive Panda guys.
A
good shot of Tim checking out a cute girl who's...checking out
another table besides ours. Story of our lives.
Ahhh!!!
It's a...not so giant robot. What he lacks in size, he makes up
in robot rage!
Tim
and Mike having dinner and drinks with Nice Guy pal and fan Summer
Hogan of Vicious Enterprises.
Mike
and Summer hanging at on the patio at the Elephant and Castle.
Saturday,
July 24th (Day Three of the Con)
Here's
a little time lapse fun. We start with a shot of the view behind
our table before the show opens.
And
then the same shot as things start picking up after opening.
Let's
try that again! Here's a shot from our table before opening...
And
then later. Wasn't that fun?
Mike
went to two whole panels during the Con. Here's one...it's Chris
Judge and Michael Shanks at the SG:1
panel!
Same
panel, different shot. They're so small for being such big TV
stars...
And
every Comic-Con, the S.C.A. guys come out and get some sword-fightin'
action going for the crowds.
While
the skull helmet is fashionable, it's difficult to get off by
yourself. It pays to have understanding S.C.A. friends.
And
the S.C.A. guys take a knee and recite the oath before the next
tournament.
Ah,
the age-old Comic-Con question. Spending eight bucks for a sandwich
upstairs, or walk all the way to the Gaslamp?
Hey,
look, says Mike, our banner's up high now! Thanks, Tony, Aaron
and Russ!
More
Nice Guy pals, including Jim McClain (surprise
guest from the east coast!), Joel, Kaye
and Ben.
During
slow points in the day, it's tempting just to start taking shots
of cute girls. I have a weakness for glasses...
Nice
Guy pal Aaron can't resist getting a pic taken
with Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (and Hawkgirl).
More
Nice Guy pal photos. It's Joel, Kaye, Ben and Aaron.
And
Joel gets a chance to feel like a star hanging out behind the
table with Mike.
Sunday,
July 25th (Last day of the Con)
Here's
some members of Team Nice Guy on the job...it's Russ,
Tony, and Tony's daughter Emily.
It's
Boss Joss! Here's Firefly creator Joss Whedon at
the Serenity panel on Sunday.
And
Joss brought company! Like, the entire CAST of Firefly/Serenity!
I know it's hard to see in this pic, but trust me, it's all of them.
Another
long shot of Joss and the Serenity cast.
Here's
a shot right after Morena Baccarin ("Inara")
flashed her boobs! Okay, not really, but the pic does make it look
that way, doesn't it? Dream on, fanboy.
On
the big screen is Adam Baldwin ("Jayne"),
Alan Tudyk ("Wash"), and Gina
Torres ("Zoe").
Watching
the panel here are Firefly freaks Russ, Tim, Joel and Tony.
The
Captain hisself, Nathan Fillion ("Captain
Mal Reynolds") takes the mic, and as he did each time he touched
the mic, said something hi-larious.
The
ill-fated brother and sister characters "Simon" (played
by Sean Maher) and "River" (played by
Summer Glau).
Joss
Whedon posing questions to Ron Glass ("Shepherd
Book") and Sean Maher.
Nathan
Fillion talking about having the legs of a dancer (you had to be
there...).
The
girl of my dreams (so of course my photo of her got her with her
eyes shut), Jewel Staite ("Kaylee").
And
perhaps one of the most beautiful women on Earth, Morena Baccarin.
Ahhhhh.
Hanging
out after the Serenity panel (and working the lines!) is Tony, Russ,
Emily and Mike.
Tony
and Emily work the Serenity autograph line, passing out Nice Guy
Firefly flyers to the hungry masses.
Aaron,
in line for autographs himself, is passing out flyers, too.
The
original Firefly boys (sans Mike, who's taking the pic) in their
Serenity shirts designed by Aaron. From left to right it's Tony,
Russ, and Aaron.
And
it's still Tony, Russ, and Aaron.
Okay,
it might STILL be Tony, Russ, and Aaron, but because they're turned
around, they may be totally out of order for all you know!
Ladies
and gentlemen, the first two-generation Nice Guy fans family! Here
are Emily and Tony proudly sporting their Nice Guy temporary tattoos.
Tim
gets some last day sketching in for a paying fan.
Yes,
Kevin Smith fans, it's Buddy Christ (tm). Available in comic stores
everywhere. Not actual size.
Garret
and the rest of the Small Press area begin breaking down their tables
as the 2004 Comic-Con International winds down to a close.
And
as the Fool Court Press table is finally broken down, Mike and Tim
pose with their table sign. Goodbye, table M6. We'll miss you!
Mission
accomplished! Emotionally exhausted Mike and Tim toast a job well
done at the first annual Nice Guy Post-Con BBQ at Russ's house.
More
of our Nice Guy pals, hangin at the BBQ. Here Aaron, Tony, Jo,
Andy and Tim enjoy fine eatin's from Chef Russ.
Russ
and Aaron smoke up in the latter hours of the BBQ.
Tony
and Tim listen to Russ's point, but are probably too drunk to actually
comprehend it.
And
we say goodbye with a shot of Wile E., official canine mascot of
the Nice Guy.
